We all want to do our bit for the planet — and being mindful of our beauty habits and their effect on the environment is a good place to start. So, we’ve rounded up some small steps and ways to be mindful when it comes to reducing everyone’s beauty footprint.
Hit pan? Squeezed all that can be squeezed? It’s a sad time when your favourite product(s) run out, but disposing of them thoughtfully totally makes up for it. To ensure your beauty empties don’t end up in landfill, we’ve partnered with TerraCycle®, the global leader in recycling the ‘unrecyclable’. Rather than throwing away your used bottles, pots, tubes and palettes, the TerraCycle® program lets us send back your beauty waste, ready to be sorted, processed and transformed into something new. We’ve introduced TerraCycle® in all stores across Australia and New Zealand, and we have collected a total of 11,948kg of empty beauty waste – more than 150,000 empty beauty containers that would have otherwise hit landfill.
So, next time you reach the end of your favourite beauty product, head into your local MECCA store and pop your empties into the labelled bin (or pass them on to a team member at the register), and we’ll take care of the rest. As for what can be put in a TerraCycle® bin, just about any makeup, haircare or skincare packaging; avoid things like aerosol cans, fragrance bottles, nail polish bottles and nail polish remover bottles though (you can find more information about what can and can’t be accepted here) — and make sure your items are empty or almost empty!
You might already own several products you didn’t even realise could be used in multiple ways. Take the Sans [ceuticals] Activator 7 Body + Hair + Face Oil: as the name suggests, it’s a great all-rounder for body, hair and face nourishment — and it can also be used as a bath oil, cuticle oil, massage oil and even a makeup remover.
Did you know concealer also doubles as an eyeshadow primer? It not only improves the longevity of the eyeshadow or eyeliner you pop on top, but also neutralises any discolouration on the eyelid; NARS Soft Matte Concealer is our pick for this trick.
Turns out bronzers are also great multitaskers, too! A liquid bronzer like Drunk Elephant’s D-Bronzi™ Anti-Pollution Sunshine Drops can be mixed into your foundation or tinted moisturiser when the warmer weather rolls around — this will deepen the shade of your base without investing in an entirely new foundation shade. Powder bronzers (and blushes, for that matter) make excellent eyeshadows — bronzers especially are great for transition shades through the crease of the eye thanks to their neutral tone and often silky, matte finish. Try Charlotte Tilbury’s Airbrush Bronzer and you may never worry about purchasing an eyeshadow again!
Rose Inc, RMS Beauty, Go-To and Isle of Paradise are just some of the brands leading the charge for refillable packaging. From blush refills to moisturiser pods and pouches to top up your existing fake tan bottles — chances are your favourite beauty brands are well on their way to giving Mother Earth a hand. Some other ways to approach reusing and refilling products include taking your old candles that have burnt down and using them as handy (and chic) storage vessels: toothbrush holder, vase, plant pot… the list goes on!
The simple act of being able to see the products you own means you’re less likely to buy more of the same thing. Take the time to go through your makeup kit or bathroom cupboard and be mindful of what you use regularly — and try to only repurchase a product once you’ve finished your current one.
