The MECCA Guide to microneedling

Got a beauty question? MECCA has the answer. From the very basics of makeup to advanced skincare and all your specific concerns, we’re here to share expert knowledge, dispel the myths and help you look – and feel! – your absolute best.

Intimidated by the sound (and, let’s face it, concept) of microneedling? Too confused to pick up a dermaroller? Think your sensitive skin would never be able to cope with a supercharged skincare device? Wonder (and stress) no more. Here, MECCA skincare education manager Giorgi Strachan breaks down the basics about this smoothing treatment that can help target acne scars, fine lines and more.

What is microneedling?

“Microneedling is a treatment that involves creating fine microchannels on the skin to help improve the appearance of texture,” explains Strachan. It’s a more targeted way of treating the skin, compared to the more extensive approaches of the past.

The treatment involves using a roller device to gently ‘prick’ the skin with tiny needles in order to stimulate skin into a revitalised state.

“Microneedling aims to target the deeper levels of the skin, with the intent to ‘activate’ cells that are in charge of synthesising proteins (think: collagen and elastin!). The microchannels can also aid in the absorption of subsequent products – such as serums – to help your skin feeling hydrated and glowing,” she adds.

What are the benefits of microneedling for skin?

Says Strachan, “The benefit of microneedling may include the stimulation of collagen production. Collagen is a key protein which supports the strength, volume and resilience of the skin. Microneedling can help kickstart the production of collagen (which naturally decreases over time) and could assist in areas where collagen presence is lacking.”

Which skin concerns does microneedling address?

There are several skin concerns that could benefit from microneedling treatments, according to Strachan:

“It could help to refine fine lines and wrinkles, thanks to its ability to stimulate collagen. Microneedling aims to target hyperpigmentation by shifting superficial pigment in the upper layers of the skin and can help to promote a healthy skin barrier (which can assist with hydration, create a more even complexion – and in some instances, even reduce visible signs of redness and patchiness).”

Do you need to go to a salon to have a microneedling treatment?

The answer depends on your individual skin concerns. “You may be able to integrate microneedling into your routine and see the results without leaving the house by using an at-home device,” says Strachan. “However, there are limits; conditions such as keloid scarring, for example, require a deeper, more nuanced approach and it’s recommended to see your GP or local dermal clinic for further advice.”

How can you incorporate microneedling into your skincare routine?

Strachan recommends introducing microneedling into your skincare routine “one to two times a week, after cleansing the skin”.

“An additional benefit of microneedling is that the microchannels can help aid the penetration of your skincare, so be sure to follow with serums that contain niacinamide or hyaluronic acid for great results!” she adds. “Avoid using any acids or mechanical exfoliants afterwards.”

While microneedling is suitable for a range of different skin types, if you have any concerns or specific skin conditions, consult with your doctor or trusted healthcare professional to make sure that it is the right tool for you.

Are there any side effects to microneedling?

“There are some considerations with microneedling – and exfoliating the skin more broadly,” says Strachan. “My top tip is do not over-do it. While it can be tempting to use techniques such as microneedling and exfoliating daily, in this case more is not better. The skin needs time to heal and respond to the treatment and letting it do its thing is where you will see the best results!”

And finally – as with any skincare tool – always make sure your device is clean and for personal use.
