Whether it’s by way of skincare or makeup, redness-correcting products are having a major moment right now. Like a real-life beauty filter, it reduces redness significantly and instantly once pressed into the skin.
Following a deep dive into the products gaining the most hype, two key elements became obvious: they either contained K-Beauty ingredient cica (formally known as centella asiatica, and informally known as tiger herb), or had a pastel green tint. Here’s why they’re worth the hype.
A staple in traditional Chinese medicine, cica is not by any means a new finding—tigers, in fact, were onto it first as they were known to rub the plant’s leaves into their wounds for its healing powers (alas the nickname ‘tiger herb’). As for human skin, cica is believed to help calm and repair irritated, angry-looking complexions, making it especially great for sensitive skin.
Naturally packed with amino acids, beta-carotene and vitamins A, C, B1 and B2, the antioxidant-rich ingredient is known to have protective anti-microbial benefits, and finds itself in the formulas of some of our top products for calming dry, dull, and irritated skin.
ELEMIS Superfood Cica Calm Booster: Like a serum but with the nourishm ent of an oil, this high-powered concentrate is formulated with fermented cica to effectively calm and soothe the skin.
Origins Mega Mushroom Soothing Treatment Lotion: Combining cica with reishi mushroom, this ultra- sensitive skin-friendly essence visibly reduces the look of redness while prepping skin for serum and moisturiser.
Glow Recipe Banana Soufflé Moisture Cream: Like an energising banana smoothie, this moisturiser is packed full of magnesium and potassium which work together with cica to calm, hydrate, balance, and even irritated skin.
Kat Burki Vitamin C Intensive Face Cream: 15 percent stabilised vitamin C meets Kat Burki’s cica-power ed signature KB5™ Complex in this everyday moisturiser, resulting in skin that’s even, smooth, bright, and protected.
Kiehl's Ultra Facial Skin Rescuer: Designed to reduce the visible effects of stress on the skin, this barrier-balancing moisturiser with cica, chamomile and rosa gallica delivers on even skin tone, free from redness and fatigue.
Sitting directly across from red on the colour wheel, green has the power to neutralise or ‘cancel out’ the appearance of redness—it’s basic colour theory that translates on a canvas, and onto your face.
While the colour may seem daunting from the tube/pot/palette (or you might have been traumatised by the thick, opaque green concealers of the early 2000s), these won’t leave you with Shrek-like results—instead, you’ll notice a more even-looking complexion instantly. Green primers are great for fair skin tones prone to rosacea and angry breakouts, neutralisin g redness with just a thin layer of product. A good one will likely save you from additional layers of foundation or concealer.
Stila One Step Correct: With the addition of a lavender hue to soften yellow tones and peach to brighten blue (hello under eyes) Stila’s cult primer does it all, eliminating redness while refining pores, controlling oil and hydrating the skin.
Smashbox Photo Finish Reduce Redness Primer: Alongside the anti-ageing benefits of vitamin C and pept ides, this long-loved green primer counteracts redness instantly while delivering on an even, velvety, and long-wearing finish.
bareMinerals Blemish Rescue Anti-Redness Mattifying Primer: In addition to its neutralising green hue, this weightle ss gel primer actively calms stressed skin with chamomile and arnica—it’s an anti-redness double-whammy.
