Switch out your shower for a bath: 7 tailored bath routines for every mood

There’s nothing quite as relaxing as a bath, but as much as we would all love to hand ourselves over to full immersion daily, the reality is that life simply doesn’t allow for long, hot baths every day.

However, if you do find yourself with a little more time on your hands, foregoing a shower and giving into bath time is well worth the effort, especially for those desperate to draw out tension, drain away pain or wash away stress.

Look to seven days of bathing as not just a break from routine but the ultimate form of selfcare.

1. The wake up call

Kick start your day with a caffeinated and fruity dip to pull you out of whatever slump or Instagram hole you’ve found yourself in. To start, wash away the sins of yesterday with a mood-boosting and antioxidant-rich cleanser like Glow Recipe’s Blueberry Bounce Gentle Cleanser and follow up with Kate Somerville’s EradiKate Mask to clear bad behaviour and give skin a fresh start. While you mask, scrub away any bad mood residue with the Frank Body Original Coffee Scrub to get the blood flowing and wake you up. Rinse and repeat as needed. If your hair needs help too, include the Frank Body Non-Stop Hair Duo Kit with its caffeinated scalp scrub and hair mask for when every inch of you needs to be woken up. While scrubbing and before rinsing repeat the lyrics of Beyoncé’s Flawless until you feel ready to seize the day.

2. The treat

Familiarise yourself with this bathing scenario when in need of some serious TLC, ideally while listening to TLC’s Waterfalls. Begin by lighting up that candle you’ve been saving for a special moment—Le Labo’s Santal 26 is at the top of our list. Next, ensure your bath is a bubbly, sweet smelling pool to submerge yourself in by adding a good dose of Le Labo’s Hinoki Shower Gel, or whatever you have on hand that is easily lathered. Wrap your hair up in a well-deserved treatment like Living Proof’s Restore Repair Mask, slip on Go-To’s Transformazing sheet mask and, depending on your mood, switch on Gossip Girl or The O.C. Finish by applying a body oil Blair Waldorf or Julie Cooper would use (that’s got to be anything by Officine Universelle Buly) and retire to bed.

3. The relaxer

Rinse away stress and anxiety with a warm but chilled approach to bath time if the news cycle brings on panic attacks and Instagram sassily tells you “you’re all caught up”.

The Boy Smells Kush Candle will start you off on the right foot thanks to its cannabis flower, brushed suede and amber laced aroma. Once the candle begins to mellow your mood, douse your visage in Kiehl’s Calendula Foaming Wash for a clean that hydrates but also just smells like relaxation in a bottle. Slather on the Summer Fridays Jet Lag Mask and occupy yourself with a soothing distraction. We suggest the melodic voice of Sir David Attenborough in Blue Planet or, begin re-watching a classic movie like Passport to Paris or Winning London while marinating in the This Works Deep Sleep Shower Gel.

Take the time to properly attend to your hair routine with a detangling and frizz-banishing duo like Bumble And Bumble’s Hairdresser's Invisible Oil Shampoo and Conditioner—rinse and repeat as required. Don’t get out of the suds until pruney.

4. The healer

When a stiff neck or tender back is plaguing your existence, we suggest a long hot soak in Frank Body’s In Your Dreams Sleep Scrub and Soak. The mix of magnesium to soothe muscles and inflammation, lavender, chamomile and Epsom salts is a clever mixture that’s slightly addictive.

Add or subtract extra treatments as required. If skin needs detoxing, apply Eve Lom’s Rescue Mask or spot treat blemishes with Origins’s Super Spot Remover Blemish Treatment Gel. If it’s your hair that needs work, comb Aveda's Remedy Moisturising Masque into your tresses. Now is the time to start a new book or revisit an old soothing favourite. Obviously, that’s a difficult decision between Harry Potter and Michelle Obama’s Becoming.

5. The celebration

For fun or just to brighten an otherwise melancholy or mundane day, turn your tub into a party or sorts, guests discretionary. Light the Sol de Janeiro Cheirosa '62 Candle which, for now, is the best replacement for a trip to Brazil. Throw on the GlamGlow Supermud Clearing Treatment, add the Sol de Janeiro Brazilian 4 Play Moisturizing Shower Cream-Gel to the mix and it’s almost a party. This would be an ideal time to call your best friend or lover and toast to the week that was. To boost your mood, locate your 18th birthday party playlist and press play.

6. The quickie

So you’re committed to a bath but haven’t got hours to spend lounging around? Prepare for a quickie the night before by working Bumble and Bumble’s While You Sleep Damage Repair Masque through your hair to wash out in the A.M. We suggest timing your bath to the duration of two songs—Christina Aguilera’s Dirrty and Genie in a Bottle are reliable options. Mix in Soap & Glory’s Clean On Me—Creamy Clarifying Shower Gel, rinse and go. Do not get distracted by drafting up witty email responses or DMs in your head.

7. The mix ‘n’ match

When you’re an adult all baths are fun but the idea of the mix ‘n’ match is to take your favourite remedies and products from your weekly bathing routine, mix and match until satisfied. Light a candle that sparks joy, mix David Attenborough in with Glow Recipe’s Blueberry Bounce Gentle Cleanser and Go-To’s Transformazing sheet mask. Switch out a soak for bubbles courtesy of Le Labo and enjoy the ride.
