How to discover your hair texture (and the best products for it)

In case you missed the memo (get it?), haircare is just as important as skincare. Yes, your hair deserves just as much special treatment as your face! The world is finally catching up to haircare that extends beyond shampoo and conditioner. And to really make the most of your haircare, it’s time to properly understand the texture that occurs naturally in your hair. All hair textures come with different issues: from lack of volume to a dry scalp to frizz galore. But why spend hours trying to fight your hair texture when it might be easier to just enjoy it and enhance it? Here are some tips to figuring out what your hair texture actually is and the products to try to keep your stands looking their best at all times.

How to determine your hair type

Where do you start when it comes to working out your natural hair texture? We spoke to Darren Summors, guest artist at Aveda, for his advice. “The easiest way to work out your hair’s texture is to wash it, gently towel dry, lightly run your fingers through to detangle and allow it to dry naturally. Try to resist touching it too much or tucking it behind your ears. Do this during the day, as sleeping on wet hair or tying it up will create an unnatural bend and movement in the hair,” he says.

Types of hair texture fall into four categories: straight, wavy, curly and coily. So here’s how you can tell… If your hair dries without any definitive bends, then it’s likely your hair is straight. If it dries with some bends or your strands have an ‘S’ shape, then it’s considered wavy. If it dries with a defined curl or loop pattern, it’s most likely curly. And finally, if it has a pattern more like a tightly curled spring or a zigzag, then it’s probably coily.

It’s also important to recognise that the hair texture you were born with can change over time. “Hair will change texture and density over time mainly due to stress, diet, hormones, heat, chemical treatments, pregnancy, medication or age,” says Summors. “So, it’s a good idea to check back in and try letting it dry naturally to see if you’ve gone from straight hair to more wavy, for instance.”

Once you’ve figured out your natural texture, you can find products to help you deal with some common issues and experience your best hair day yet. Read on below to discover the best MECCA products for all hair types and textures.

Products for straight hair

While straight hair might seem pretty straightforward (pun intended), like all textures, it has its issues. Common problems include oiliness (as there are no curls to slow down your scalp’s natural oils), damage (often from overdoing it with heat styling) and lack of volume. A dry shampoo like the Living Proof Perfect hair Day® Advanced Clean Dry Shampoo is the perfect solution to flat hair and oily roots, bringing volumising texture to sleek strands.

Protecting and repairing damage is also vital for straight textures. Whether you’re adding heat or giving your hair a break, a protective treatment like the OLAPLEX No. 9 Bond Protector Nourishing Hair Serum can help to strengthen hair bonds and shield your hair from damage – without adding weight that drags down fine hair. Or try out an on-the-go multitasker that conditions, smooths and protects – the Gisou Honey Infused Leave-In Conditioner is a spray that does all of the above.

For the days when you have a bit more time, the cult-favourite Briogeo Don’t Despair, Repair!™ Deep Conditioning Mask deeply nourishes damaged strands. And finally, enhance the shine that straight hair is known for and tame frizz or flyaways with a hair oil like the Gisou Honey Infused Hair Oil. Just like that, smooth, nourished hair will be yours!

Products for wavy hair

Wavy hair is one of the most versatile hair textures. Because it already has some natural body and movement to it, look for products that can help you maintain (and enhance) that. A texture mist (we love the Sam McKnight Cool Girl Barely There Texture Mist) can help volumise waves to give you that effortless, tousled look, minus the weight.

To maintain your natural waves, the Aveda Botanical Repair™ Strengthening Leave-In Treatment can be applied to damp hair to add moisture and strengthen your hair from the inside out. It’s a vegan treatment that both repairs and prevents damage (and gives you the smooth, flyaway-free hair of your dreams). If you’re in a rush or your waves need something super lightweight, the Bumble and bumble Hairdresser's Invisible Oil Primer is a spray treatment that nourishes unruly strands. Plus, its signature blend of oils helps to shield hair from damage caused by heat or UV rays.

Looking for some extra frizz reduction? The Living Proof No-Frizz Instant De-Frizzer is an innovative dry conditioning spray that tames up to 92 percent of frizz on dry hair. Finally, just like with straight hair, your waves will look their best with some extra smooth and shine – run the Gisou Honey Infused Hair Oil through your strands for that frizz-free, I woke-up-like-this look.

Products for curly hair

Curly girls (and guys) unite! In recent years, more and more people are rediscovering their curls and getting back in touch with their natural texture. But with so much guidance out there (TikTok, we’re looking at you), it can be hard to know where to start. Let’s take it back to the beginning – curly haircare kicks off with your wash routine. Ever wished for a hairdresser massage at home? We have! Briogeo has got you with their Scalp Revival Massager to deeply cleanse your scalp from build-up or flakiness. Once you’re out of the shower, avoid towel drying your hair (a sure-fire path to frizz). Instead, lock in that much-needed hydration by gently wrapping your hair in a microfibre towel, like the Aquis Rapid Dry Turban.

When your hair is no longer dripping wet (but still holding some water), it’s time to secure that moisture. The main aim of curly hair maintenance: hydration, hydration, hydration! Our picks? The Briogeo Farewell Frizz™ Rosarco Milk Leave-In Conditioner is a sulphate-free spray with a variety of oils to seal in moisture and minimise frizz – curly hair goals! Follow up by scrunching through a defining cream or gel to bring out sleek, formed curls. We love the Bumble and bumble Curl Defining Crème for a flexible, frizz-free finish (without the crunchiness). If your curls are on the damaged side, a restorative oil like the OLAPLEX No. 7 Bonding Oil is the perfect addition and can be used on dry or damp hair to protect, nourish and bring that shine! Your curls will thank you.

Products for coily hair

Coily (or kinky, or afro-textured) hair is the most tightly curled hair type. Like other curly hair, hydration is the number one goal. More so than any other hair texture, coily hair struggles with dryness and breakage, as the scalp’s natural oils take far longer to travel along each strand. The solution? On wash days, use a deeply conditioning hair mask like the Briogeo Curl Charisma™ Rice Amino + Avocado Hydrating & Defining Mask after shampooing. The protein-free formula seals hair cuticles to promote consistent curl patterns and enhance definition. Gently place wet hair in the Waffle Luxe Hair Turban from Aquis, specifically made to dry thick hair without heat or friction for less frizz and breakage.

Add an ultra-hydrating definer like the Briogeo Curl Charisma™ Rice Amino + Avocado Leave-In Defining Cream to improve moisture retention and help your hair form smooth, frizz-free coils. Because coily hair is particularly prone to dryness, it’s also important to space out wash days. To keep hair hydrated and shiny between deep conditions, castor oil is an age-old remedy. Briogeo’s B. Well Organic + Cold-Pressed 100% Castor Oil is entirely pure and organic, packed with vitamin E and omega fatty acids. This multitasker can be used daily on hair, scalp, skin and cuticles to subdue flyaways and frizz while deeply nourishing – hello healthy, bouncy hair.

A good hair day every day

Regardless of your hair texture, Summors says it’s about loving what you’re working with. “It’s important to embrace your hair's natural texture now more than ever, as I think it shows a sense of pride and power — a symbol of individuality and diversity. Allow it to do its own thing, treat it with TLC, [and get] regular haircuts, and bad hair days will be a thing of the past."
